A collaborative Nolana breeding project has been initiated with Dr. Rosanna Freyre,
(Research Associate Professor, Department of Plant Biology, University
of New Hampshire, Durham, NH). Since 2001, Dr. Freyre has grown potted plants at UNH Research Greenhouses
from mericarps largely provided by M.O. Dillon's prior collections. Seven (7) different
Nolana species are under cultivation: N. acuminata,
N. aplocaryoides, N. elegans, N. flaccida, N. humifusa,
N. paradoxa and N. rupicola. Between July and September 2001,
324 interspecific pollinations were performed in all possible
combinations. A total of 61 interspecific hybrids were obtained,
combining N. paradoxa x N. aplocaryoides, N. paradoxa x N. elegans,
N. paradoxa x N. rupicola, N. elegans x N. paradoxa and N. rupicola x
N. paradoxa. These hybrids have been evaluated as potted and bedding
plants and are being maintained for further research. Silica gel dried leaf samples
for DNA extractions, herbarium specimens, and pollen
samples of all parents and hybrids have been gathered.
One and a half greenhouse compartments (total 180 m2) at University of New Hampshire (UNH) are available for growing Nolana accessions and hybrids. Additional greenhouse space (400 m2 ) is available at Woodman Research Farm, UNH, in two double-polyethylene film greenhouses. Field space with irrigation access is available at Woodman Research Farm. During the fall of 2002, Dr. Feryre collected additional Nolana germplasm from central and southern Perú. In December 2002, Dillon and Freyre established the "Centro de Germoplasma de Nolana" within the "Proyecto de Conservación del Amancaes y Vegetación de Lomas", established at the Lomas de Pachacamac by PRODENA, an NGO in Arequipa and Cemento Lima. An agreement has been reached to maintain germplasm accessions at the experimental greenhouses at Lomas de Pachacamac, 40 kms south of Lima, Peru. We currently have Nolana humifusa, N. inflata, N. aticoana, N. plicata, and N. laxa in cultivation. Also, fresh seeds of eight additional Peruvian species will be sown at UNH in Spring, 2003. A portion of these results has been published:
