Nolana Species List

 Nolana L.f. (Solanoideae, Nolaneae)

Nolana is a neotropical genus of 89 species distributed from northern Peru to southern Chile and one disjunct, endemic species in the Galápagos Islands.  Nolana is the fourth largest genus in the Solanaceae behind Solanum, Lycianthes, Cestrum and just slightly larger than Nicotiana and Physalis (Knapp, 2002). Nolana species are often important members of their respective communities and dominate in the numbers of species and individuals present.  Most species, ca. 71, are confined to the lomas formations, however, ca. 13 species are restricted higher elevations sites, well inland and outside of the influence of coastal fogs. One species is endemic to the Galápagos Islands. Only four species of Nolana have distributions from southern Peru to northern Chile, i.e., N. adansonii, N. gracillima, N. lycioides, and N. jaffuelii.  All other species are confined to either Chile or Peru and most have narrowly restricted distributions.
