Quebrada Rinconada

The quebrada know as Quebrada El Rincón or La Rinconada is ca. 5 km north of Paposo and due east of Punta Rincon at the coast. The quebrada has two arms, one large which runs to the northeast and a shorter right arm which extends to the right side of the mouth of the quebrada. The coordinates of the right arm are approximately 24°56'S, 70°29'W at the mouth to 24°56'S, 70°28.5'W. From the LOMAFLOR database, we record 49 families and approximately 114 species. Perhaps the most rare and threatened are two new species, Tillandsia tragophoba (Bromeliaceae) and Griselinia carlomunozii (Griseliniaceae) and several other species with highly restricted distributions occur there as well (see CHECKLIST).

A New Species of Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae)
from the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile

Dillon, Michael O. 1991. A new species of Bromeliaceae, Tillandsia tragophoba, is described from the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. Brittonia 43(1): 11-16.

[A new species of Bromeliaceae, Tillandsia tragophoba, is described from the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The leaves of this new species are green, essentially glabrous and form a basal tank capable of holding water, quite unlike the typical gray-leaved, terrestrial or lithophytic bromeliads usually found within the coastal desert province of western South America. A description and illustration are provided, and its relationships discussed.]

Tillandsia tragophoba is based upon: Type: Chile. Antofagasta (Región II), Prov. Antofagasta, Quebrada Rinconada, ca. 5 km N of Caleta Paposo, (24°56'S, 70°30"W), 240-440 m alt., 4 Nov 1988, M. O. Dillon & D. Dillon 5869 (Holotype: SGO; isotypes: F, SEL, SSUC, US).

A new species of Griselinia (Griseliniaceae)
from the coastal Atacama Desert of northern Chile

Dillon, M.O., Muñoz-Schick, M. 1993. A revision of the dioecious genus Griselinia (Griseliniaceae) including a new species from the coastal Atacama Desert of northern Chile. Brittonia 45: 261-274.

[ABSTRACT: The genus Griselinia (Griseliniaceae) is revised and a new species, Griselinia carlomunozii, is described from the coastal quebradas in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. An illustration, a discussion of its possible relationships, a key, and descriptions of all species are provided.]

Griselinia carlomunozii is based upon: TYPE: CHILE. Antofagasta (Región II): Prov. Antofagasta. Quebrada Rinconada, . 5 km N of Caleta Paposo, (24°56'W, 70°30'W), 240-440 m, 4 Nov 1988, [staminate individual], M. O. Dillon & D. Dillon 5864 (Holotype: F; isotypes: GH, MO, NY, SGO).
